The Paramecia

The Paramecia is a music project founded in Nanjing in 2013 by singer-songwriter and poet Su Zixu. Rooted in a distinctive creativity, the band integrates brass and strings with rock instrumentation to blend folk, world music and progressive rock. In their devotion to grandiosity and subtlety in equal parts, The Paramecia evoke musical landscapes and journeys of immense furore, as well as profound quietude. In their songs, both whispers and shrieks of poetic verse echo overtop ever changing harmonies; a butterfly’s wings gently flap moments before it plummets into the abyss.

After several lineup reshuffles, the band finally settles its Beijing-based ensemble in 2016.

Hang on the Box

Whatever you think of gia’s music, the former Hang on the box frontwomen is the one who brought Beijing punk to the world. When Hang on the box formed in 1998,few outside China had any idea of Beiing’s thriving punk scene.A year later, gia and her band were pouting on the cover of Newsweek, the only Chinese band ever to do so,and the secret was out.Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins,Marilyn Manson and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs all pronounced themselves fans, and soon no one could get enough of the band’s brash bitch-pop.Ten years on,gia’s still going strong,DJing and playing with new band gilr kill girl.If some would argue that her music hasnot moved on much, she’s still a joy to watch in a city where a lot of band seem to be make up of uni-versity geeks trying to be Joy Division. And while she’s fond of giving regular one-finger salutes, she was extraordinarily sweet and patient when our shoot was delayed.

MACONDO

Genre: Instrumental Rock / Post-Rock / Math-Rock

line-up:
Guitar: Scott Slepicka (US)
Synth/Vocal: Gerald Van Wyk (SA)
Bass: Fred Shi (CN)
Drums: Matthew Byrne (UK)

Macondo make some of the most interesting and exciting music coming out of Beijing today: instrumental rock with elements of math-core, infused with vibes drawn from 70s psychedelic music, adding the production and sound of today’s electronic music. Their unique music shifts from sounds that are ambient and heavy, spacious and dense to atmospheric but rhythmically driven. Bombastic drumming, layered with lush floating guitar textures and earth-shaking energetic bass attack, and otherworldly synthesiser sounds.
Formed in 2014, the band quickly made a splash on the Beijing music scene, their live shows left audiences open-mouthed, describing it as ‘Volcano Rock’.
Macondo’s name came from the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, a town that has no contact with the outside world.
“Macondo is not so much a place as a state of mind, which allows you to see what you want, and how you want to see it.” – Gabriel García Márquez
They are currently in the process of recording their first full length album.
