Tobias Preisig, born in 1981 in Zurich, was admitted as the first violin student at the Swiss Jazz School in Berne, where he was taught by Andy Scherrer and Peter Frei. In 1998, important festivals in Switzerland honoured him with soloist awards, e.g. the Jazzworkshop Interlaken. Furthermore, he performs with the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra and receives the sponsor award from “Generations 98 Frauenfeld”. In 1999, he represents the Swiss Jazz School at the IASJ (International Association of Schools of Jazz) in Paris. In the same year, he starts his music study at the New-School University, Jazz Department in New York City and completes his degree with “Bachelor Of Fine Arts”. In New York he was promoted by Richie Beirach, Reggie Workmann and Gerald Beal. In 2000, while staying in New York, he was invited by Rufus Reid to join the Masterclass at the Ravinia Jazzfestival Chicago. In summer 2003 he was touring Europe with the European Youth Jazz Orchestra, performing amongst others at the Siena Jazz Festival. Thereafter, Tobias Preisig spends six months in Paris, giving concerts together with Vincent Peirani and Marc Barron. Back in Switzerland, in 2004 he starts his own quartet and records his first CD “Chapter One”. Several concerts in Switzerland are followed by two tours with “Sax n’Sounds” within Germany and the Netherlands. At the same time, from 2004 to 2007, Tobias Preisig studies at the Academy for Music and Theatre in Zurich and completes his master degree in cooperation with Prof. Ulrich Gröner. In 2005, Preisig receives a cultural sponsor award from the canton Appenzell for a violin soloist project.
Tobias Preisig performs with several bands of different styles such as Herbie Kopf’s “Close Contact”, his own band “Warnton”, the project “Alpan” as well as “Johannes Lauers Streicheinheit”, followed by the “Araxi Karnusian’s Strange Sound-Beautiful Music” in 2007. He regularly performs with George Gruntz as a duo. In 2007, Luciano Biondini turns the duo into a trio performing at the Bach Festival in Leipzig and “Les Museiques” in Weil am Rhein. Further concerts and cooperation with Thomas Demenga, Daniel Schnyder, Christian Zehnder and Nik Bärtsch. In 2008, on the occasion of the Quincy Jones Night, Tobias Preisig performs at the Montreux Jazz Festival together with Pepe Lienhard and with Albin Brun’s “Sphères Alpines” at the Jazz Festival Willisau. He cofounded the “Kaleidoscope String Quartet” that performs original compositions of contemporary Jazz with string instruments. Preisig played the premier concert of Fritz Renold’s Double Violin Concerto with Marks Soskin and Adam Nussbaum. He records a Duo-CD with George Gruntz and David Liebman as a guest. In fall 2009, Preisig was Artist in Residence at Switzerlands most prestigious Jazzclub Moods, where he presented his new quartet for the first time. In spring 2010 the quartet released ifs first CD “Flowing Mood” on the New York label ObliqSound. On the following release-tour the band played several successful concerts in Switzerland, Germany and France, among others at the Kaufleuten Zurich, Beejazz Bern, A-Train Berlin, Altstadtherbst Düsseldorf and on important festivals like Cully Jazzfestival, Schaffhausen Jazzfestival, Basel Off Beat und Überjazz Hamburg. Besides playing with his quartet, Tobias Preisig is also on tour with different formations: among others, one with voice-acrobat Christian Zehnder and another one with “yellow” lead singer Dieter Meier („Out of Chaos“), with whom he toured several times through Germany. In November 2011 Tobias Preisig was awarded with a cultural grant from the city of Zurich.
