The Terry Hsieh Collective is comprised of some of the most young and upcoming musicians in the music world. Their music has been hailed as a powerful mixture of diverse influences and sounds, ranging from hard bop, to gospel, soul, and traditional Chinese music.
CJQ, also known as The Chase Jackson Quintet is comprised of five powerhouse young musicians: Chase Jackson on vibraphone and marimba, Alex Cummings on saxophones, Ian McArdle on piano and keyboards, Brandon Gaoiran on bass and Zaire Darden on drums. These young stars embody a forward leaning sound informed by both the traditional and modern schools of acoustic jazz.
Though strongly rooted in the tonality of a classic small group, CJQ’s voice is distinctively its own. Possessing a unique and extensive repertoire of original compositions, this band strikes a delicate balance between elaborate written arrangements and improvisatory prowess. Individually each member of the band has played at numerous internationally known venues such as Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival, The Monterey Jazz Festival, Yoshi’s, Nighttown, Cliff Bells, and clubs throughout China and Japan.
This January, CJQ will be embarking on its first international tour. As part of The Jazz Meets East Winter Term program, this group will travel to Beijing and Shanghai where they will perform numerous concerts, conduct masterclasses, and engage with the top musicians in China’s budding jazz scene.
